SKETCHBOOK GUIDE
SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENT
ON DECEMBER 18-19th you will REVIEW your sketchbook- How have you grown? What do you feel you’ve improved on?
- Do not TRACE your sketch- if you use a reference, print and include it so I can give you skills feedback OR send me an email with a link to the artist. Always give credit to the original artist who inspired you (aka be the OP not a reposter)
- You can choose to turn in 1 completed drawing utilizing the full page, shaded with pencil or charcoal, outlined with ink, or fully colored with colored pencils, markers, crayons, or pastels. If you use paint, I suggest painting on a separate paper unless you have a mixed media sketchbook.
- OR you can turn in 3 CONCEPT sketches - incomplete but original sketches in pencil
- You may use the PROMPT or come up with your own- but try to always be ORIGINAL
- You must turn in your sketch at the beginning of the class on Tuesday unless otherwise instructed. Keep your sketches in your sketchbook so that you can refer back to it later. Attach a turn in sheet to the sketch you want graded, and label your sketch with the due date and prompt if you used it.
- August 28th - Draw YOURSELF if you were in your favorite cartoon/ favorite art style
- September 11th - Use unique FONT, LAYOUT and ART to demonstrate meaning of your FAVORITE QUOTE

ON DECEMBER 18-19th you will REVIEW your sketchbook- How have you grown? What do you feel you’ve improved on?
- Sketchbook Assignments: 30 pts
- Due Every other TUESDAY. These are due at the beginning of class. If you turn it in later that day or the next day it is -5 points off, two days late -10 points, three days late -15. I will not accept it after 3 days, but you can replace it with an extra credit drawing.
- You can choose to draw whatever you want and use whatever medium you want! I will have suggestions and handouts available for those who are struggling with an idea.
- This is HOMEWORK and must be separate from your project planning. However, if you are finished with your project in class, you are encouraged to work on your sketches and are welcome to work ahead.
- A Sketchbook drawing should be a COMPLETE DRAWING.
- FULL PAGE/COMPOSITION: Use the full page and create an interesting view
- DETAILS: Use color, add shading, or finish with pens to make your piece complete.
- CRAFTMANSHIP: Technique and quality demonstrates at least 45 minutes spent on the piece.
- Sketches should be DATED. Marking it with a GRADING SLIP will help me find it and mark WITH A DUE DATE!
- ANY SKETCH THAT IS TURNED IN INCOMPLETED WILL BE GRADED AS IS. This means that if it is not colored/shaded/inked, you could get up to -15 points.
- If you need to borrow supplies in order to finish your sketch, please ask before the end of the day and use the sign out sheet. Return the material by the next class period.
- Extra Credit Opportunity! You can do up to 1 additional sketch for a total of 30 extra credit points! It will be graded harder, so do a great job on it.
- Forgiveness Pass: 1 forgiveness pass for high school, 2 forgiveness passes for middle school
- If you lose your two forgiveness passes, you will not get another, so tape them into your sketchbook! If a sketch is due on Tuesday, this extends it to the beginning of class on Monday. If you do not turn it in by Monday, it is ½ off and unacceptable by Wednesday. Remember, it is your responsibility to give me your sketch. I also suggest you turn it in directly to me as I may not check the sketch box.
ORIGINAL CONTENT: AKA DON'T BE AN ART THIEF
We all get inspired by things we see, but when we trace an image from the internet, we don't build the skills we need. If you are struggling with coming up with an idea, consider using a prompt from THIS RANDOM ART PROMPT GENERATOR, draw something from a book you read, or practice drawing by observing.
Tracing Art from online is THEFT - ask permission when possible, give credit always, and change content by at least 70% If you really like a character from a tv show, don't just copy the first image you see. Try to come up with your own pose, change the background, combine different characters, etc. It is ok to do fanart, but remember to GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE! It is OK to not feel good at sketches at first- practice makes BETTER! Your sketchbook should be your opportunity to explore art you want to try. It is between ME and YOU- you don't have to show anyone else. I will give you feedback to help you improve, so always read my notes! |
