TAKE CARE OF THE TABLES: We will not be using the plastic table cover this year to make it easier to draw on. This means that I am trusting you to take care of the tables as much as possible by:
use a flexible cutting board when using an xacto knife or permanent markers
use a canvas drop cloth if you are using clay and glaze
use a vinyl tablecloth or scrap papers under your painting/easel
use the bare table when using drawing materials, but remember to wipe down with a wipe or sponge afterwards
If you spill something, clean it up right away so it doesn't have a chance to stain
TAKE CARE OF ART TOOLS:
Tools aren't fidget spinners- use them for their intended purposes
Put tools back in the right place
Don't take tools without permission --use the borrowing sheet when borrowing tools
Make sure all lids are closed before you put them back
sharpen pencils after you've used them
After you've cleaned your paintbrushes thoroughly and dried them, put them back BRUSH UP to save the bristles
If you purposefully break a tool, you owe me another tool and you get to come in to help me clean my classroom!
Remember that this is a shared space with shared tools --let's treat it well so that we can still have nice things!
2. TREAT OTHERS HOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED
Be aware of where you are and what you are doing: try not to mess up someone else's artwork by being careless
Be kind and supportive to each other -art is a way of expressing ourselves, being mean about someone's art can be very hurtful
If you are having trouble with someone, talk it out first- ask them nicely to stop, remove yourself from the situation, and if necessary come get the teacher.
Listen to the teacher- I want to help you get better at art, get a good grade, and keep you safe
3. CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF
1. You are responsible to put away all your artwork in your locker or the drying wrack 2. Clean up your own materials- put them away, wash off pallettes and brushes, etc. - DON'T LEAVE BRUSHES IN THE SINK 3. Clear the table off early during cleaning time so table wipers can get their job done 4. CLEANING TASKS ARE FOR AFTER YOU'VE CLEANED UP YOUR OWN MESS. When you've finished taking care of your space, grab a cleaning task from the cup by the door. Once you're finished, put it in the "Done" cup. DAILY TASKS: Tasks that must be done every class period that include sweeping, wiping off tables and chairs, organizing materials, etc. +PAINT TASKS: When we work with paint, there will be 6 additional tasks that need to be completed on top of the regular daily tasks. These include things like organizing the paint, making sure all brushes are washed out properly, and that the sink is clean +CLAY TASKS: Additional tasks done when doing clay that include wiping off and organizing tools, shaking out canvases, and wedging excess clay. + MISC. TASKS: These tasks will be listed on the board
PAINT CLEANING RULES 1. If you are painting, you should have a PALETTE, BRUSH, CUP and PAPER TOWEL as well as a painting surface 2. At cleaning time, wash your brush off in your cup, wipe it with the paper towel - if it is a watercolor brush and your water was clean, you may put it away. If you were using acrylic, wash out the brush by putting soap in the palm of your hand and swirling it under water, like the gif. 3. DO NOT DUMP PAINT DOWN THE SINK: Scrape excess paint into a trash can. 4. If you will be using your the same colors in your palette, save your palette by spritzing it with water and covering it with plastic wrap. 5. If you are not using your palette again, you may leave it open to dry on the red or white drying rack as long as you scrape off dry paint the next day. Make sure your name is written on the bottom of your palette with a dry erase marker. 6. If your palette needs to soak, put it in the middle sink full of water and soap. Remember to clean it before the end of the day. 7. Put paint back as soon as you have filled your palette. Remember to close the lids tight, and do not crush the lids when trying to get paint out.
CLAY CLEAN-UP 1. CLAY AND PLASTER CLOGS THE SINK- wash clay tools out in the bucket in the 3rd sink to allow the clay to go to the bottom. DO NOT PUT PLASTER IN BUCKET AS IT RUINS CLAY. Let Plaster dry and then dump it. 2. Form excess clay into a ball and put it back into the clay bag 3. ALWAYS CLOSE THE CLAY BAG AFTER YOU PUT AWAY CLAY 4. If you have extremely dry clay, break it up and put it in the slip bucket under the wheels 5. If you want your clay to stay in the plastic stage, spritz with water and double wrap it before putting it in the yellow cabinet 6. If you are ready for your clay to dry, cover lightly with a bag and put it in the window shelf 7. Keep the clay shelf organized, shake out the canvas in the garbage or outside
4. HAVE FUN, EXPLORE NEW THINGS, AND BE WILLING TO PUSH YOURSELF
Have a positive attitude - look at things as an opportunity
Never say I CAN'T! That gets you into a bad mindset - think "I will try!"
Don't think "I'm NOT GOOD at art" --you just haven't had the practice or the drive to do so yet.
5. IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING, TALK TO ME
I will happily help you, all you need to do is ask! Sometimes, it might mean coming in at lunch to get help, but I am always willing to help you.
