1. Students will be able to recognize environmental art, famous artists, and the impact that natural art installation has on the environment and the viewer ( 6th.4.3:3. Eco-art is a contemporary response to environmental issues; 7th.4.Art and design strategies can solve environmental problems) 2. Students will collaboratively create an installation piece utilizing natural objects in the environment, considering the theme and concept they want to convey
What is ENVIRONMENTAL ART?
ENVIRONMENTAL ART UTILIZES NATURAL OBJECTS
ENVIRONMENTAL ART INTERACTS WITH THE NATURAL SPACE THROUGH INSTALLATION
ENVIRONMENTAL ART MAKES A STATEMENT, MAKES YOU LOOK AT SOMETHING DIFFERENTLY. IT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AN ARTIST AND NATURE, WHEN AN ARTIST INTERVENES TO MAKE VIEWERS STOP AND THINK.
ENVIRONMENTAL ART IS NON-PERMANENT
Artists use eco-art to create different statements
Andy Goldworthy
"Andy Goldsworthy is an extraordinary, innovative British artist whose collaborations with nature produce uniquely personal and intense artworks. Using a seemingly endless range of natural materials—snow, ice, leaves, bark, rock, clay, stones, feathers petals, twigs—he creates outdoor sculpture that manifests, however fleeting, a sympathetic contact with the natural world. Before they disappear, or as they disappear, Goldsworthy, records his work in superb colour photographs." http://visualmelt.com/Andy-Goldsworthy
Christo and Jean Claude
The branches of the Wrapped Trees pushed the translucent fabric outward and created dynamic volumes of light and shadow and moving in the wind with new forms and surfaces shaped by the ropes on the fabric
Christo and Jeanne Claude must plan their work years in advanced to get approval of the environmental impact of their projects. While all of their projects are NON-PERMANENT installations, they are introducing a new material to an environment on a large scale. Christo makes drawings of the planned projects and sells them to fund their large installations. There are still some ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES that might occur. For example, an issue of one of their plans in Colorado, which would cover the Arkansas river in cloth, is that it could impact the people and animals of Canon City due to traffic. After 25 years of planning and getting all the approval from the government and spending over $5 million trying to get this project going, Christo is closing the project down. Read about the FOR (link 1, link 2, link 3) and AGAINST( link 1, link 2, link 3) arguments for this project.
What do you think? Would you fight to keep this project going or are you with ROAR? 1. SPLIT GROUP- 1 for and 1 against 2. Develop argument- focus on 4 reasons 3. have 4 spokespersons, one per each reason. Each spokesperson has 1 minute to say their piece 4. Once all spokespersons from each side have stated their case, have one person from each team REBUTTAL
PROJECT OVERVIEW
To create this piece, you will need to follow the same steps that most environmental artists do: 1. Get inspired by a space and material- you must be visible from the art room 2. Draw sketches and plan out your idea in detail 3. Make an ART PROPOSAL to get APPROVAL - what statement are you making? how long will it last? what materials will you use? Will it impact the area in anyway? 4. Once you have approval, you can then create your piece.
